Próprio

We were looking for a typeface, somewhat uncomfortably between “industrial” and “craft”, to use as a display typeface for the identity and book of the Fabrico Próprio project.

Loose sources of inspiration are the typefaces of the earliest times of the Industrial Revolution, when this kind of confectionery first appeared in Portugal on a “semi-industrial” (a term coined by the project’s authors) level: rough Grotesques still rooted in classical rules of type design, not yet at home in their own simplicity and often inexpertly made.

This was an interesting tension to work with: We wanted to make Próprio look a little tacky, and like an old version of the future, but at the same time we wanted to draw a “proper”, well-made typeface. It was so engaging that, although we only needed one style of capitals, we ended up with a whole range of weights of complete typefaces...
