The Studio

Atelier Carvalho Bernau is an independent practice for graphic design, typography and typeface design. We are based in The Hague, The Netherlands.

We design printed matter (mainly books), bespoke and retail typefaces, and identity programmes. With an interdisciplinary network of other committed creative professionals, we develop interactive and web solutions, installations and exhibitions.

If you would like to read an in-depth explanation about how we work and how we think about design, you can do so here.

We have lectured and set workshops at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, the Écal in Lausanne, the Typographic Society in Vienna, the Danish School of Media and Jounalism’s Typo08 conference, the Arnhem ArtEz design school, the MICA in Baltimore, among others.

The People

Susana was born in Porto, Portugal, 1979. She studied Graphic Design at the faculty of fine arts at the University of Lisbon, (1998-2002) and graduated from KABK's Type Design MA program 'Type & Media' in 2004. She teaches graphic design at the Bachelor course at KABK, the Royal Academy in The Hague.

Kai was born in Germany, 1978. He studied Graphic Design at University of Applied Sciences Schwäbisch Gmünd in Germany and at KABK in The Hague (BA) until 2005, and also graduated from Type & Media, in 2006. Currently he teaches type design, and occasionally publication design, at the Master in Art Direction at Écal in Lausanne.

The Typefaces

Unless otherwise noted, our typefaces are only available directly from the respective type foundries (CommercialType, House Industries) that released them, others from our friendly distributor Village (soon!), but not directly from us.

The sample texts for showing the typefaces on this website are taken from the following sources:
The Cluetrain Manifesto by Levine, Locke, Searls & Weinberger,
Histoire(s) du cinéma by Jean-Luc Godard,
Sentences on Conceptual Art by Sol Lewitt,
How to work better by Fischli & Weiss,
What are Master-Pieces and Why Are There So Few of Them by Gertrude Stein,
The Situationist Manifesto by Debord, Jorn, Constant et al.,
Topography of Typography by El Lissitzky,
First Things First 2000 manifesto by Barnbrook, Bell, Baluveldt, Bruinsma et al.

About this website

On September 4, 2007, we launched the third version of our website, a very simple slideshow. It was designed around some sort of a content management system that would allow us to just drop new content (text files and images) into a folder, to make the process of updating the site as easy as possible. We never did.

This current iteration is built with Indexhibit, a web application envisioned and developed by Jeffery Vaska and Daniel Eatock “to build and maintain an archetypal, invisible website format that combines text, image, movie and sound”, as they say.

This website is online since May 28, 2009 and has last been amended with new content in July 2011.
